Metamodern – RSA New Contemporaries 2019

I installed ‘Metamodern’ in the RSA New Contemporaries 2019. Charles Jencks’ ‘Critical Modernism’ and the essay ‘Notes on Metamodernism’ by Timotheus Vermeulen and Robin van den Akker were among the key texts in the research behind this project.

In this work, the interaction of modernist art and architecture were used to highlight the tensions between nature and culture. Design elements from the high Modernism of the 20th century were situated with the ‘informed naivety’ of a contemporary metamodern viewpoint.

Exposed reclaimed timber was used throughout and architectural models were crudely rendered to bring us psychologically back to basics. Pairing natural with synthetic, architecture with art, the ‘nature’ of our designed cultural environment was brought into question.
